runaway turtles

msimonds Jun 20, 2003 05:12 PM

I have been keeping a smaller (~4" female slider for the past year and a half in our outdoor pond (about 500gal) without and problems. This past week we purchased a slightly larger male to offer some companionship and put him in the same pond. Within a day or two, both had gone missing. We found the male about 30-40ft away hiding under a log, but he promptly ran away again.

What is it that I am missing here? Any suggestions for recovering our turtles and preventing this from reoccuring is appreciated.

If the pond conditions aren't just right they will leave the pond in search of better waters. You will need to build a small wall or fence to keep them in the pond if you recover them. Sorry about losing them. Just keep looking for them and ask your neighbors to keep an eye out.
