My Red Eye Tree frog has not been eating or active for a month *Pics* help

Sean_Maxwell Jul 04, 2004 06:11 PM

I bought my RETF about a month ago at a pretty well known pet store (That Pet Place). They didn't tell me anything was wrong with the frog at the moment. I am well aware that they take awhile to settle in, but hes slightly over the limit for eating as far as I've read. His tank has branches all the way across the top and some Croton plants (fake) tangled through them. He's got plenty of cover, although he doesn't use it. He spends most of his time on the glass curled up. I keep his tank extremely humid with daily mistings and a fogger. The temperatures and humidity is perfect. I also have a Banana Tree Frog in a 10 gallon tank. He is being kept in the exact same conditions without a problem.

Setup:

- 55 Gallon Aquarium
- Bed-a-Beast substrate
- Baked branches at 400F for 15 minutes to remove parasites/bacteria for his arboreal needs
- Gradient hot to cool setup
- Day bulb/lamp for heat, night time viewing bulb/lamp for heat
- Shallow water bowl with objects in it incase he fell into it and had to climb out
- 3 large fake Croton plants tangled between all the branches
- Cover over my mesh lid to help keep in humidity
- Sheet over the glass of the 55 gal. to make sure he doesn't see movement and stress out

Any help would be appreciated. I'm including more pictures on a separate post after this one if you'd like to see them.

So far I can only think that his cage is too big for him, and that I need to section it off until he is used to it.

And while on the topic, I'm am not 100% sure he hasn't ate yet, it's just a well educated guess from monitoring him.

Thanks,
Sean

When you say hot to cool for the temperature gradient what do you mean by this??
I would suggest that at the absolute warmest you try to keep them below 80 F with a nightime drop. If the temps are too warm then the frog will not eat. If you are messing with the frog on a daily basis it may not eat. They are nocturnal and feed after the lights are off so it may be eating but you are missing it.

Also try getting a mid-size bowl that the crickets cannot climb out of due to having slippery sides. Place the bowl on the bottom of the tank in an open spot and put the crickets in the bowl just before you turn the lights off. The frog should be able to find the crickets as the crickets won't have had a chance to hide.

Hey ed,

By gradient hot to cool I mean that it's 78F on one side, and lower 70's on the other. So he can regulate his body temperature.

thanks for help, i'll try that tonight

By the way, at night time it drops to 70F.
