for those who feed their herps roaches, where is a good place to get them? Has anybody tried breeding them??

I am trying to step up the size of my frogs food as large crickets are becoming a tease and am looking for a good place to get hissing roaches. For those who use them, where is a good place to get them online? I have looked at some of kingsnakes feeder sites and havent been able to locate any. Also, does anyone know if these are fairly easy to breed? I remember my biology teacher had some as class pets and there were always babies in there with the larger ones. I want to try and get my own breeding group going so that I can have a constant food supply. thanks for any input, it is greatly appreciated.

There is a feeders forum you should post on, probably the info there. THey are easy to breed, although it took me over 6 months to raise progeny large enough to use. I also want to point out the risk of impaction. The roache's thick carapace passes through untouched by digestion and can easily clog up the GI tract.

I was just wondering because I have one larger female pacman right now and then I just bought my two baby pixies who are already rapidly growing and like I stated before, Full grown crickets are becoming sort of a teasing snack for my pacman so I know they will not do much for my pixies when they get full grown. I am looking for a larger prey item for them other than mice becuase I do not want that to be there staple diet. What other options are their for larger frogs? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hissers also have very spiky legs that can perforate a stomach or intestional tract in those animals that do not chew them.
Try one of the larger Blaberus species (such as giganteus) or deaths head roaches.
I would suggest looking in the classifieds on petbugs.com and contacting roachman.

I have a colony of Cuban Banana ROaches that is finally taking off.

i have lobster roaches...started with in January...i have over a thousand now...i have a mid sized pacman and a small pixie and the size of the roaches is not a problem...it's probably better to feed alot of smaller prey rather than a few giant sized items...i give them silkworms now and then because my picky cham gets bored of them...they are definetly big enough

I'm not sure that I agree with the more small prey assumption as Ceratophrys are adapted to be large prey consumers.

now that i think about it your probably right...nature gave them large mouths for a reason...my pacman isn't the greatest hunter and , though he does eventually catch the roaches, it is a struggle for him...the pixie on the other hand is exceptionally good at catching prey and i believe it is better to feed them many appropriate size prey rather than a couple of giant items
