Question about 1 of my snakes for Experienced Breeders....

Peter_Jolles Jul 05, 2004 06:59 AM

This Goini, until yesterday, was easy to palpate - I could feel 10 eggs very easily. She shed 14 days ago and I have been waiting for her to drop.

As of last night I can not palpate the eggs any more. I can not feel a single one! Has anyone here seen this before? I have seen pics that show eggs smashed up pretty tight together when laid and I am wondering if that is what is going on - maybe they are so full that they are hard to tell apart.

Or is it possible that she is going to absorb the eggs back into her system?

I feel lke signing this post "Dear Abby; Thanks, Confused"

Thanks for your help,

Peter Jolles

Here is another pic.

By the way, she has not eaten in a month so her bloating is not from chow.

Thanks,
Peter Jolles

If those pictures are of her in her "can't feel her eggs" state, I would leave her be, she'll lay them asap! Just don't keep disturbing her! Beautiful snake! I had hoped to have Apalachicola eggs this year, but the first breeding didn't take, and the male died before I could put them together again. (Last year he bred her once, regurged at the second attempt, and I got 8 eggs, this year he bred her several times, then she developed an RI and then when she was better, he was dead?... perhaps he was sick all along!) Now i'm just saving up for a new male Apalachicola to cross her to.

... I snapped those pics ten minutes before posting.

Do you think my theory is right? You think that the eggs are so "full" that it is hard to tell where one begins and the other ends?

Thanks,
Peter

P.S. I am sorry to hear about your apalchicola. I bought her, one male brooks king, and one female florida king as somebody's "castoffs" at a reptile show. I think I paid $75 total for all three!

I'm pretty sure she will lay them soon. Does she have a good laying container? I will be very excited to see pics of the hatchlings in sixty or seventy days! It's hardest waiting!

Some people just don't care for the Apalachicola or Florida Kings. To me they seem to have more "character" than a lot of other snakes. I was truly devastated to lose Phantom (the male) as he was my favorite snake... personality wise... even if he was too dumb to know my finger wasn't a mouse (and would BITE)... he was just my fave. It's hard to think about replacing HIM, but I do have to have a nice male apalachicola to put with HER and with her daughter who might be up to breeding size next year.

I'll be going to the Tucson Reptile Show in August and in the meantime I'm saving all the money I get for selling mice, rats, and gerbils. I've been saving a couple of months and the tally is nearly $100. Hopefully I will find a good match for her, and next year have my own Appalachicola hatchlings again.
