A quick questions about beans. Do you have to soak the beans first or just split them in half and serve? Please let me know asap because I am going to the store to buy some.
Thank you

deb, i just buy the 16 (or15) soup bean mix (no seasonings just beans). i just chop them up, removing the few pieces that might be too large. place them in a little bowl and watch him go to town! i was very surprised to see my uro chomp away on such hard little beans. i keep them available in his enclosure at all times. ocassionally i will mix in some bee pollen granules(health food store) and some juvinile iguana pellets. maybe the bee pollen will entice him. also you might want to pick up some squash blossoms (found at upscale produce stores-at least in my neighborhood). supposedly uros are fond of raspberries, try some of those-mine won't touch them! you could try spring mix-be sure to remove the spinach leaves. the greens that my mali enjoys are collard,dandelion,romaine,kale... anyway i hope i was of some help to you and loWRIDER. i know what it is like to have an ill uro-although my tale did not have a good ending. your story seems a bit different-keep up the good work. hope all goes well!
p.s. i have to mention that i'm not too keen on the oyster shells in the bird seed. i would try finch food (no sunflower seeds) as that is what i use as a substrate. good luck!

I think alot depends on their age, for younger uros I would say that soaking them for a bit before you feed them is probably a good idea, but for older uros it probably isn't that necessary.

I don't soak mine at all, but I do grind them up in a coffee grinder, quite small for the little guys. Some of it comes out dust-like and I sprinkle it over the greens.

BTW, make sure you have a new coffee-grinder, JUST for the uros, as I don't think you want a caffiene-high little uro bouncing around the cage!

Thank you for the advice. As per the seeds I changed them to the Pretty Bird Premium Finch seeds. No animal product or oyster shells. I will let you know how things turn out.
