question about heating....

pogo_the_dragon Jul 05, 2004 01:32 PM

I noticed something about POGO that I needed help with....I noticed on his basking side the temp fluctuates from 102-110 throughout the day..I know from research these are acceptable and with most dragon owners ideal temps for the basking side...However I noticed that POGO doesn't go anywhere near where the center (Where the temp probe lays) of that temp would be...So off to the center where he lays which is usually 2"-3" away from the probe the temp would drop probably down to maybe 98-102....So I tried a little test...I put a smaller bulb in and now the temps area anywhere from 93-98 degrees...Now according to most the people I know they say this is way too low for a dragon, but the funny thing is he seems to like it better...He lays dead center of the probe and seems more relaxed when he basks...Soo is that temp to low for him to digest properly??? If It's fine I'll leave it cuz he looks more comfy....I'd like to know about this...So sooooo long!

Hi!
I had the same question a while ago. My dragon seemed happiest in the 98-100 degree range, and wouldnt bask at all if it was any higher. What I was told was that as dragons get older, they sometimes prefer the temps to be a lil lower than when they are babies. They dont need it as high when they are adults. If he is happiest with that range, and is still eating fine and pooping normally, then you shouldnt have a problem. My Pharoah has been kept at 98 degrees and he is doing just fine.

because the most important thing is you ARE giving your dragon a gradient and your dragon is choosing what is best. But the key is the choice, which is available. Is your dragon pooping ok? The answer to that question will let you know if the temps are suitable for proper digestion.
