My rats avg. 9.8 per litter. Who knows about the mice because they eat the young so much.

Most of my mice averaged 10 per litter...my first rats had horrible litters. My original female's largest litter was 5, her daughters largest litter was 8. From what I have heard though, Rats are suppose to have larger litters on average than mice but so far in my experience, the mice are having the biggest litters.

My mice regularly hit the high teens and my rats just double digits. That said, I breed rats selectively for color and type (hairless and dumbo) The mice I just let go and keep the best producers so I may have selected for those bigger litters too. I don't have trouble with moms eating litters much. A big thing to me is to pick daughters to replace old girls in tubs and they don't seem nearly as likely to cannabalize.
