Mouth-To-Lizard Resuciation

harryhd Jun 20, 2003 06:37 PM

something great just happened!

I heard a rukus coming from my lizard tank and went to find my 1 year old girl gagging up the bedding material. It was jammed into her mouth and she was gasping for breath, black beard, looking terrible! I grabbed her and took her to the sink and put her down on a towel while i got some good water temp going. Within a 20 seconds, she wasnt moving, eyes closed, bad lookin.

I managed to clear out her mouth and throat and then repeatedly tried to make her gag reflex for lack of a better phrase make her cough up the rest of the material. She cleared it, but wasnt moving, and was barely reacting. You've all been there. Then for about 15 minutes, I repeatedly breathed into her mouth and massaged where i thought her lungs would be, occasionally opening her mouth up and getting a little water in there. Every so often, she'd make a water or breathing noise. After a good TWENTY MINUTES of this (i wasnt giving up) like on ER, she started to respond and showing signs of life. i also did little things to provoke her feistiness and it WORKED!!!

She seems totally fine now, it's been a few hours and she's climbing around like normal. I am so ecstatic.

what substrate was she on?

Think it's time to change to repti-carpet? Take her off that bedding please. I always use repti-carpet, when they are dirty I use paper towels untill I wash them. Why take chances with partical bedding. So what if it doesen't look as nice, as long as you don't have to give mouth to mouth ever again. I've been using a non slip plastic table cloth cut to the size of the tank. Real easy to keep clean, safe, and sanitary. I would give the dragon a few baths the next couple of days to make sure she passes any of the stuff she might have eaten. Good luck.

Wow, that's amazing..... Thank God she's ok!
Good Job! (-And you may wanna get her off that substrate so she doesn't try and eat it again...)
