Tank Mates?

urofan80 Jun 20, 2003 06:40 PM

I picked these two uros up from a buddy of mines reptile store. They were tank mates in a 30 gal tank. So I figured there wouldn't be any problem with them getting along. But one uro is larger in size than the other, I was just wondering since they are in new surroundings will they start to behave different towards one another I have had them for about 1 1/2 weeks. They seem to get along well there is no fighting over food but the smaller one eats alot more than the bigger one but the bigger one does eat. What behaviour should as a sign that they should be seperated if need be. heres a pic tiger is the large one closest to the camera and sarge is the smaller one on the rock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had my niger housed with two beardies for close to 4 mo. NO problems what so ever! They ate together, "sunned" together, and napped together. The uro of course had his fav spot he would go to to get away for "personal time", but I NEVER saw any threats or subissiveness from any of the 3 animals.

My niger now has his own enclosure, and is doing great. I think the thing I would recomend in your case is to make sure that you provide at least two hides. I think that its importaint for uros to have their own place to go if they want to.

Im sure ill get flame for my husbandry, but all I can say is that the situation happened to work out for me, and Im not reccommending that everyone do things my way.

I'm also not an expert on this but I think you shouldn't have a problem no matter what their particular uromastyx species or gender is. Just make sure you don't cycle them unless you have a breeding pair. When waking up from brumation, they will fight if you have 2 males. Just watch them closely and make sure both are eating and you should be fine.

Both the other two responses are correct, but I'd like to add a couple of things. Definately, you don't want to put two adult males together, and though you do want to watch you two uros closely, there can be "fighting" that you don't see. Watch for sore or hard spots where biting can be occuring, and also, their weight. If on is dominant enough, the other may not eat, and we all know how that turns out.
Also, yes have at the very least, two hideouts, but also two basking areas and two food dishes. These are just as important.

Good luck.
Jim
