how to switch my dragons over to a cricket free diet

rayquaza Jul 05, 2004 05:38 PM

I know there is a site somewhere that tells about cricketfree diets for bds. Can someone give me an address please. Or maybe just some info on how to do this. They will already eat pellets along with greens/veggies/fruit..But they will hold out for crickets and mealworms if I feed them only greens and pellets..How much should two 12in bds be eating a day of the greens and pellets? I made the mistake of putting a few mealworms in thier salad and now they wont eat it unless there are mealies in it.Thanks ahead for info.

Pellets are a complete meal nutritionally so they really don't need anything else. Even though I feed pellets I also give salad but I dust with t-rex VGF that is a lso a complete food. I offer live prey several times a week for variety too. If you hold back the live food they will make up for it by eating more of the other. They may wiat for the crix but eventually if they are eating pellets and greens, they will just eat more to make up for it. My guys at 12" were eating about a teaspoon of juvie repcal pellets at a meal. Check here for more food info and for links too

Is it cheaper to have your BD on a cricket free diet??? B/c i order crix @ 500 @ a time for just over $15, and that lasts me about 5 weeks (and that's not to much), but if its cheaper for a non crix diet, i might wanna try that.

(non-expert here)Well, my 2 cents is that its cheaper because you don't have to buy the crickets, containers to keep them in, food and water for them. I feed my beardie pellets and salad and only use live feeders as treats (i gut load them on pellets and fresh veggies) And i only buy about a doz so i can feed them off and not have to keep them anywhere.Lo

last season I was going through 28,000 crix a week 1000 supers roaches. I was able to cut cricket cost in half as they switched over and then it went down further as I increased pellets.

different BDs eat different amounts but as a ball park starting figure, A 4.5 lbs bag casts me about $10. that's about 2000g. a cup of 200g will serve 100-200 BDs depending on size. So if 2000 grams is 1000 servings that's enough to last over a year. Keep in mind I do feed other foods so even cut that number to a bag lasting you 4 months for one BD, That's $10 for 4 months vs. 25 crix a day (3000 crix is an very small number)is that a savings?

I think so. notice the bags of repcal pellets on the shelf?
