Need some general information about Collared Lizards.

gsir8 Jul 05, 2004 06:15 PM

I saw a collared lizard today at the pet store today and thought that they were very cool. I have a bearded dragon and a leopard gecko already, so I know alot of stuff about lizards. I would like to know how big they get, what size cage they need, what they eat, the average price for them, what type of heating the cage needs, are they good lizards to be handled, will they bite if you handle them? Thanks

I would like to know how big they get,
They are about 5 to 6 inches from snout to vent and about 12 to 3 inches with tail

what size cage they need,
Minimum 30 gallon but 40 gallons works aout better if you have a pair.

what they eat,
bugs such as crickets, moths, super worms, spiders, etc...

the average price for them,
$20 to $50 depending on the species and locality and whether they are captive bred.

what type of heating the cage needs
usually 80 on the cool side and 100 to 105 on the basking site.
I use heat rocks and they work great.

, are they good lizards to be handled,
They can be handled much like a bearded dragon but they like to jump out of your hand and explore.

will they bite if you handle them?
They usually don't bite but can if started or if they are a wild caught lizard. I usually get bit trying to feed mine.
When I'm dumping in crickets and a finger is in the wrong spot,
they mistake it for food but that is rare.

Thanks

I found a care sheet for them, and it says a 20 gallon can be used, which would help alot, because I already have a 20 gallon long cage. Can they be kept in a 20 gallon long cage?

BTW thanks for the info
