Genetics question

EmberBall Jun 20, 2003 06:45 PM

OK, we all have beaten to death the fake morph controversy, but I now have another question along those lines. How many people really do not know their genetics, and are selling morph snakes? How many, what percent of the smaller breeders actually know their stuff, and what percent are selling 100% het albinos from a het to a het albino breeding? I am not talking about the people who do it on purpose, I am talking about the people who are selling 66& hets as 100% hets because they just do not understand the way simple recessive genes work.

I really hope there aren't too many people like that. After reading some of the genetics posts on here lately, though, it makes me wonder.

I learned Simple Recessive and CoDominant from pages I printed out from NERD. I just don't get the Double Het stuff completely, tho. Luckily, I'm not messing ith that yet.

Genetics aren't too hard to understand, but if you wanna check them out, I definatly reccomend NERD's site.

My Snakes

I always ask what the parents are before I purchase a snake-- just to be safe. If they don't know what they are talking about, I don't buy from them. There are a lot of people out there with high hopes and good intentions, but no smarts when it comes to genetics! So far, everyone I have delt with on kingsnake has been correct in their ad's. representations. (66% vs. 50% vs. 100 % hets--etc.) I've heard some amazingly confused people (customers) at expos! I think the fact that you have to pay to advertise on kingsnake weeds out a lot of the rif-raf/uneducated.

I've been reading this forum for a while, and the genetics issue comes back o so many times. And honestly, since I never was really good in biology, I don't understand a word. But since I'm planning on buying a BP (my first) soon, and genetics are apparently a 'major' issue, where can I find a good article with (the basics of) what is to know about it, and maybe also an explenation and example of all those 'morphs' you guys always talk about?

Thanks, Gillou

N.E.R.D...... go to www.newenglandreptile.com and look under the genetics section. They have all you need to know about genetics. If you still have questions, you can email me, and I will try to explain it in more detail, or you can post again with specific questions.

Just thought for a second you were calling ME a N.E.R.D... Great site. Thanks. Time to freshen up my biology. Gosh, and I thought High School was a once in a lifetime ordeal...

Like it really stops in high school!!!! C'mon guys, learning is a lifelong process. I would recommend taking some biology, zoology, and/or genetics classes at your local Community College. You'll learn a great deal that will help you in caring for your herps...unless you live in Mississippi, their CC's suck!
