I got the frog!

lele Jul 05, 2004 07:17 PM

Erin, Victor and others with African Clawed Frogs,

Yes, I know this is not the right forum and if anyone really objects we can move it to the frog forum.

Barb brought by Skipper (named by her students), the African Clawed Frog, today. She also brought 5 beautiful Madagascar Hissers - they are so pretty for roaches! I had seen them before but now I will have time to hang out with them! LOL!

OK, back to Skipper...he is big and in a 5 gal tank with 2 little fake plants. I told her that the next time she sees him he might be in a townhouse with new furniture! She feeds him 2 "reptomin" (TerraFauna) pellets each day. I assume he will eat bloodworms? They are gross but I am sure he could use a change! Any other food suggestions?

She went over the water testing, etc. so I am set there (except foudn otu that MY water is VERY acidic!) I would love to see some setups (will post this to frog forum) so any pix appreciated along with any other advice!

thanks, lele

Okay, I know EXACTLY what sort of frog you have now. Not the same type of frogs I had, ones I had were considerably smaller (maybe 2 inches, snout to vent, closer to one inch). AFC frogs are considered an invasive species here in CALIFORNIA (don't get me started, hehehe). The little ones I'm talking about have almost the same care though, and same life expectancy. As far as I know, either can live to be 15-30 years. The African frogs (ones I had) aren't territorial and multiple ones can be kept together. I know they both THRIVE on live and frozen foods. They go Ga-ga for brine shrimp.
Hissers are great pet roaches and log lived. From what I gather, they can live up to five (yes five!) years. Although I found my hisser fascinating, I had to trade my colony for Orange heads. They don't grow as big, but they don't climb either!
Speaking of frogs and unintended pets, turns out I have this little toad that is trying REAL hard to be adopted. I keep finding him in my wash room (comes in through garage). I keep putting him out, but he keeps coming in. I guess he's tagging the runaway crickets, cause he looks rather fat and happy!

did you get my email? Nothing important, just conversation re: a thread

AFC are invasive in CA? Bummer. When folks dump their unwanted fish, turtles, frogs, etc. into local ponds and toher water it can cause major problems in some instances. Milfoil (an aqautic plant) is a HUGE problem here in NH (yes, we have a LOT of water here - it's not ALL trees - LOL!

Anyway....I really want to get this guy into a bigger yank and get him some furniture. I came in at about 4:30 a.m. (to look for my second escaped gecko) and scared the sh-t out of him and he scared me, too! Poor little guy

I think you should adopt the toad

Yep, got the e-mail. I agree about 'the posts'...

I don't remember reading anything in any caresheets about having to scare them in the middle of the night. Is this a new Genius method for ensuring proper bowel movements of your ACF? And what are you doing up at 4:30 anyways? Only toads and myself are awake at that hour!
>>I think you should adopt the toad
Well, he's living in my garage at the moment. Despite the fact that I've given him a 24 hour notice to vacate the premises, he claims that as a tenant of the property, I have to provide him with a 30 day eviction notice, and then have the local deputies evict him forcibly. I don't think the Sherriff is quite ready to take this up, too afraid of getting PeTA involved.
No, I'm not going to adopt this toad. I'll let him come and go as he sees fit, eating the stray crickets and scaring my wife when she does laundry at 4:30 am.... coming full circle, what is it with women, toads, and scaring each other at 4:30?

I was going to say - my cats get me up when the birds begin chirping, which is 4:30. Since I was up I decided to look for my escaped gecko and when I got near Skipper's tank he moved suddenly which scared me! I forgot he was there and of course didn't have any lights on. think I need a red bulb for everyone's sanity!

Then I went back to sleep for another 4 hours

It doesnt really matter what you put in with these frogs as long as it is food thats all that matters to them. The frog pellets manufactured for the african clawed frogs by H.B.H. are actually a blood worm pellet. Acidic water you can always naturally lower it by placing cork bark in the water.

lele Jul 06, 2004 10:00 AM

Cork bark raises pH? Interesting. Maybe I will give him a corkbark hide...then again maybe not as it will float LOL! Thanks for the tip!

Cool! Hope you two have fun =)
The frogs are really easy to care for. Frequent water or partial water changes (every week or less) should be considered though since they can get messy with uneaten food etc.
On average you should have anywhere from 5-10 gallons per frog. live plants are nice but they tend to have destructive behavior =)
Mine like bloodworms very much, I think you can get the little squeeze packets at walmart *sogross* Tubifex worms and also goldfish food are also acceptable.
Somewhere to hide is one thing they like as well, a little rock cave or even a broken terra cotta pot works. Just as long as they have somewhere to feel safe should they get spooked.
Hmmm... just trying to think of any other things that might help!

If you need an info site/forum specifically for AFC's try this one. I know the frog forum here can take days for a reply. This one seems to have someone on there 24-7 and they are really nice. And the moderator is an expert on these frogs. A really neat site all together!
Good luck! Feel free to bug me if you have any questions =)

I just joined that forum - thanks! Yeah, some of the KS forums are really slow, so that's why I always post here.

Barb was told to change the water every few months! She set it all up before he got here so he is good for awhile. I am so obsessive I'll be checking his water all the time! LOL!

I have extra tanks so I may move him later, but for now he really needs a place to hide. I came in at 4:30 this morning to look for Gaia (my second escaped gecko and we both scared the sh-t out of each other!

I am sure I will have questions for you. Thanks!

you can feed fruitflies too..and if your going to use live food, i'd use blackworms if you can get them....they aren't as messy and they'll live in your gravel and help keep your tank clean
