Gargoyle set up and incubation help....

leoking182 Jul 05, 2004 09:05 PM

Hi, I know the basic care for a gargoyle gecko I was just wondering if this would be sufficient enough for a gargoyle gecko...

36"L X 18"H X 18"W, with cypress mulch as a substrate, with 2 egg laying chambers, and drifwood all throughout the cage, and a shallow water dish, a heat 65 watt spotlight bulb, so it averages around 80. Is this sufficient for a 1.1 and/or 1.2 gargoyle geckos, and good to breed succesfully?

Also, if I am lucky enough to get eggs from my gargoyles what is a good incubation temp, is around 80-83 good?, and is moist potting soil good for a incubation substrate? Thank you.

The cage setup sounds fine, but the 65 watt spot bulb is a bit much. I think you'll notice that the temperature directly beneath a 65 watt spot bulb is going to be a lot warmer than 83 degrees...that is, if you're measuring it accurately (with a temp gun).

Gargoyles really don't need anything under 80 and anything much warmer than that can be detrimental to their health, so if I were you, I'd just use a 25 watt bulb and only during the day.

I use 25 and 40 watt bulbs for my Green Tree Python cages to get a basking spot of 86-88 degrees...and that's in my basement, where it's never more than 75 degrees.

Also, two nest boxes is unnecessary, but other than making it tougher to find eggs, it won't hurt anything.

I incubate the aurics along with cresteds at 75 degrees F. For media I use a roughly 50/50 mix of coarse vermiculite and coconut fiber thet is moist but not soggy.

I have had a few problems with 100% vermiculite (especially the fine stuff) with cresteds. A few hatchlings were lost from having the vermiculite impacted in their mouth.
