Hey! I usually don't share the "cute" or, more often "dull" details of my road herping trips--but this was TOO WEIRD! I'm a youth pastor for a church, with an undergrad degree in Bio. and many years of experience keeping snakes.
Tonight, I took a couple of guys from the youth group with me, and we went snake hunting--a pretty popular thing with a lot of my kids. Anyway, it was the hottest day of the year so far here in N.C. (mid-90's), and we had a storm just about dark, with low pressure and a brief, drenching rain, then some breeze following. We went riding on a favorite road and ID'd two Northern Water Snakes and a nice little female Copperhead. On returning home, one of the guys hopped out and started to run around the car to help me with equipment--then froze. He said, "Hey! There's one right here under the tire!" I couldn't imagine--"one WHAT?" Turns out, we had missed by about an inch running over a nice juvie Black Rat Snake which had just killed and eaten a rodent (obvious from fresh blood and hair in the carport) about 2-1/2 feet from my kitchen door!
That HAS to be the WEIRDEST thing I've seen in about a zillion road cruises! Personally, I think God often has a sense of humor about such things--we found it hysterical, at any rate!
Take care & God bless! --Steve in NC
