uvb question

lola44 Jul 06, 2004 07:23 AM

OK, i'm beginning to think I'm never going to get this new tank finished but here i go again with more questions. The new enclosure will be 6ft long X 22inches high..... It just dawned on me that the Reptisun uvb bulb that i was going to use would be too high to be of any good for my dragon. So,,, i figure i have 2 options,,,,, build a basking shelf and have the bulb run above that AND place one under the shelf also or use a mvb. Now i have no experience with the mvb's could someone please give me a little insight into them? I think i read that they are to be used with you dragon no closer than 12 inches and that they also produce heat,,, is that correct? Thanks agian for any input.L.

Yes, they are ballasted to fit in a normal fixture, but produce both heat and UVB. I use a powersun bulb, as my only bulb.

Yes, they get very hot and will melt the plastic fixtures.

I tried the power sun and hated them, I used mine in a built incluser with sliding glass front doors and ventelation in the back but the problem with the power sun is that if the caging inside temp goes up the bulb shuts off which is fine till the temp drops for the bulb to go back on(my tank hit 85 and the bulb went off) but now till the light goes back on there is no UVB no lighting at all. I went back to a heat bulb and I use Chromalux for my UVB. Also the powersun did not give off enough UVB.

Just my insite on these and why I do not use them.
