my turn for mouth problems..

lele Jul 06, 2004 10:46 AM

...well, actually Luna has the problem. As some of you know her mouth does not always close completely but never seemed to interfere with anything. In the past week she has not eaten as much, hiding down in her scheff and seems stressed a lot (nothing has changed so I am a bit baffled). I hated to do it but I showed her a mirror to get a good look in her mouth (tried to get a pic but couldn't get one close enough). On one side there seems to be a little yellowing on her gum; not pus, or swelling. For the most part she is all pink but I want to catch this early. She has been shooting soil lately and sand from her laying tub (possible infert eggs again? see earlier post) and I think she may have irritated her gums.

She is eating - shot a couple moths this morning. Any suggestions? I will get her to the vet if need be but wondering about any OTC remedies, articles, etc. I looked at the usual sites and read about stomatis but i don't think it is that.

thanks,
lele

I've managed to cure and keep mouth infections at bay by swabbing the gumline and mouth juncture with chlorohexadine solution. My vet gave me a little bottle of it. Could you buy a little bottle from your vet? Aggressive cleaning will probably keep an infection away.

I will check with my vet, thanks

That's what I would suggest too. Chams do get little nicks and scratches on their gums from food occasionally. She may be stressed by a sore gum and more reactive. If you catch this early the cleaning/disinfecting should help.

that has alos been suggested and I have that on hand

When I asked my Vet about that, she said it was ok, and wouldn't hurt (swabbing with a Q-tip dipped in it that is), but that the antimicrobial properties of HP weren't as good as the chlorohexadine. If you have some, I would try it. You may have to do it a little more often, or more thoroughly,
but I bet it would help.

I just tried it and expected her to make a face (LOL!) but she didn't respond at all. I am going to call my vet tomorrow about the other. She's acting weird in many ways and I do think it may be another clutch - UGH!
