how do you think this would work for a cage?

mike d Jul 06, 2004 01:56 PM

i did a quick drawing in paint of the idea i have in mind for the cage for my igg.. not sure if this kind of cage will work but it what i am aiming for.... the other thing i was thinking of is since he isnt good a climbing yet.. or for better words cannot climb in a straight line... and doesnt realize that the edge of shelveing is there i think i an going to make the cage about 4 feet tall and mount it at the top of the ceiling in my room this way he doesnt lose any roaming space on the floor of my room. and since he roams alot i think that is good

just want to know your ideas

That's very similar to the cage we've been building for Xander. It's a titch wider, and a big longer since you made your short sides longer (ours are only 1ft. long on each size) but the basic design is the same.

I can't tell you how I like it, since it's not finished yet. It's halfway done being painted, then we get to interior decorate.

But obviously I think it's a great design, since it's the one we decided to go with in your case, I think it wouldn't hurt to make it even deeper or wider, since your ig can't climb very well. Using a corner cage, I was concerned about inside dimensions... but again, your design solves some of the problems with ours.

Can't wait to see it when you're done! I'm sure your ig will love it!

Here's a picture of it before we painted it. We're using hardware cloth for the holes It's 6' tall.

Hi Mike,

Sorry, it's been a little while since I've come back to the forum and reading this post, I realized that I forgot to post the pics I promised to post, of the roping and screen shelving I mentioned in my last post. LOL

We did use the white wire shelving you mentioned and it does work great -- easy to clean, easy for the ig to get around. However, I noticed that our ig has a hard time figuring out how to go up and down them. Once he was on the floor, he kept trying to go right through the shelves, since he could see through them. He did figure it out after a while, though.

Here is a pic of his cage:

You might want to consider this other design, though, because it's much cheaper and seemingly, much more comfortable for the ig. We used plastic-coated 1/2" hardware cloth (we had some lying around -- I would have prefered the 1" for an adult ig), cut it to size, then wrapped some roping around the rough edges to create a sort of "hammock"; we used the same rope to attach the hammock to the walls using hooks.

We had initially installed sterilized branches in the terrarium, but after observing our ig trying to get around in there, we realized that we needed to make changes, because he had a real hard time trying to grab the branches. It was like watching him try to climb a greased pole.

The fact that the basking area is made up of a hammock and a few branches seems to be very comfortable for the ig, because he has the best of both worlds -- branches to lounge on, and at the same time, plenty of surface and areas for his claws to grip when he wants to turn himself around. He really, really looks comfortable in there -- makes me want to move in there with him, sometimes!! LOL

Anyway, here's a pic of the cage:

Here is a close-up of the basking hammock:

What's also neat about this type of shelf is that you can cut out a few holes so that your ig can get around even easier.

A close-up of the hooks and how the hammock is attached (we used one in each corner):

To attach the rope around the branches, we used something called a "blanket stitch". Not sure if you can tell what I'm talking about by looking at the pic, at any rate, if you want to do something similar, I can go into more detail.

Close-up of the rope (sorry about the poop -- this was before we cleaned... LOL):

This works better than simply wrapping the rope around the branch in spirals -- the rope lies parallel to the branch so that the ig's claws can grab it easily. It's quick and easy to do, so it's easy to replace when it gets too soiled or starts fraying...

Last pic coming up...

he sure does look like a happy igg!!!

with my igg it is more that he doesnt climb straight... he always goes off to the right side of things... so i am afraid that he will fall... i feel that he was severly abused in his old home and now it is taking its toll on him... it sucks that he cant act like a normal igg.. but i love him anyway!!!

I read in another post someone suggesting just putting more shelving so that if he does fall, he won't fall far... So maybe just put several hammocks?

I'm sure you'll find a great solution for your ig! Hang in there. (No pun intended... LOL)

the thing is is that most of the time he doesnt even show any intrest in climbing.. when he roams my room he will climb up on my lap, look at me for food eat and then go roam the room...

im going to contact my vet and see what he suggests.. last time i talked to him he thought it would be best if i just provided him with more floor space, and put a low shelf/hammok for him to bask on and make the cage off the ground(which is why i want to build it from teh ceiling down) so it gives him teh feeling he is off the ground.. this also wont take up any floor space for his roaming... so he gets the best of both worlds
