Gravid veiled cham - Help!

siriusblack5 Jul 06, 2004 01:58 PM

Question - how long does it take for a chameleon to lay those eggs?? My chameleon has been showing signs of being gravid for at least a month now, first she went on a hunger strike, walking all around the cage, then everytime I opened the door she wanted out. So I put a pan in there with a 2" mixture of peat, sand and topsoil, keeping it moist. Still nothing. She has been eating normally again, but I can see the eggs above her hind legs. Also she hasn't been pooping - I have not found any in a week or so! Is it vet time?
I live in southwest Florida, so yesterday I decided to move her cage outside - 90 gal repitariam - I have a screen enclosure and she is so happy out there walking all around. She seems happy out there, her color was very green - plus it's more quiet than my living room! I believe she is approx 1 year old.

she needs a depth that exceeds her body length (at the very least) and holds a tunnel well (stick your finger or a stick in) so it doesn't collapse on her. If she does not find an adequate place to lay she will retain the eggs and could have serious complications. Her activity in her outdoor cage is probably just looking for a place to lay. Was she bred or are these infertile.
Have you made sure she has gotten adequate calcium during the whole process?

Luna was VERY restless the two days before laying.

Ok - so it's not deep enough?? I used one of those tin turkey roasting pans - and the mixture is moist and will hold a spot when it's dug - and she has not been bred.

no, it is not deep enough. Luna dug 10" down into a pot. I would replce what you have ASAP! use a deep empty plant pot or other plastic container at LEAST as deep as her body length. If she ends up egg bound you will likely lose her and/or incur big vet bills.
