How to determine the sex of snakes?

How do you do it? Lift up the tail see if anything hangs out? (bad joke no im not serious dont freak out, lol). But seriously, how do you do it?

I have had good luck going by tail shape. By that I mean looking at the shape and tapering, especially from the vent back. Generally males have no real taper at the vent and continue gradually, with a longer tail. Females taper at the vent, taper to a smaller, shorter tail.
My suggestion would be find someone who knows and get a 'feel' for it from them.
