Babyleo...Advice Please

Tarzana Jul 06, 2004 02:24 PM

I have posted here recently with some questions I had about a 4 inch you leo that I'm watching for a friend. Since the leo threw up he has hardly been eating anything. All he does all day is hide, and even at night from what I can tell. What he does eat is wax worms. I know he really shouldn't be eating them, but I just want him to eat. he has a hide under the light, and a hide away from the light. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How long has it been since he's thrown up? How long have you had him/her? Is it in the same cage or did you have to move it? What are the temps like?
Honestly they don't technically need light unless they're in a pitch black basement room or something. They're nocturnal animals and will naturally find the most pitch black corner to wedge themselves in.

Try not to feed them waxworms unless its your last resort. Have you tried crix? or other insects?

4 inches is pretty young, he's prolly just stressed out that he threw up :D

I have only had him for a couple weeks. I am watching him for a couple months while my friend is in Venezuela. I have a six year old female leo so I basically know what I'm doing I just kinda forget how to take care of a baby. Well he came to me on sand, and I didn't like that so I kept him in the same cage, but I changed the substrate to papertowel. He hasn't thrown up for about a week, but he also hasn't eaten much since then. The temps are okay, in the low 80's on the cool end and in the low 90's on the hot end. I only have the light on him because he used to have an undertank heater but it got too hot when I moved him off of sand so he needed another source of heat. In a couple days I'm going to make a trip to the petstore and get a night glow bulb for the night time heat, and during the day it gets warm enough without any heat. Does all of this sound good, anything else I can change?

I'm sorry to hear about your friends leo. If its not eating and regurgitationg waht it does eat, it coud have a sand/food impaction. When my leo was on sand and stopped eating it was because he had an impaction. In a young leo this could be the case. Try putting him in some warm(not hot) water up to his belly for awhile. If it is any type of impaction this could help. Or you could get xrays down, but its really expensive and stressful on the little guy. I hope it gets better Good Luck!

No sounds perfect, sorry if i sounded condesending its really hard to tell if people are new to leos or not.

Try other foods and the temps sound good. I've had problems with mine when the UTH actually broke without me knowing it. A week is ok as long as he's still drinking, but keep trying sometimes they need to be inticed into eating.. for example take a mealworm and move it around, or mash it on the head to get it wriggling.

I'm outta ideas but i know what it feels like when no one reples :P

Good Luck

How did you know that your Zoo Med ZOO MED U.T.H. broke because I just bought one yesterday and it only goes up to 80 degrees and I need it to go to 90 degrees.

Okay I'll try harder to get him to eat, because thats basically all I can do right now. Ya, thankyou for replying reguardless of how much you had to say, it is really frustrating when you're so concerned and it seems like no one wants to help. But I can't complain because so far this forum has offered me tons of support and great advice. Thankyou again, Kara
