SC-what a rush

Langly2112 Jul 06, 2004 02:54 PM

Being from the North East-it was a huge difference from here-no such thing as road herping here-tried it a few times-NADA

We didn't catch hardly anywhere near as many things as we saw and didn't even see alot of thing we hard-LOL

Here's what we did manage to see:
6-Green Anoles
3-Race Runners
2-5 Lines Skinks
1-Eastern Glass Lizard
4-Ground Skinks
1-Mole Skink
13-Alligators
More Toads and Frogs than I can even imagine: Species we did see for sure:
Bronze Frogs, Green Treefrogs, Grey Treefrogs, Pine Woods Treefrogs, Narrowmouth Frogs, Squirrel Frogs, Cricket Frogs (Southern I think), Oak Toads, Southern Toads, Southern Leopard Frogs, Billfrogs, Spadfoot Toads, Spring Peepers.
Turtles:
3-Eastern Mud Turtles
3-Eastern Box Turtles
1-Red Belly Turtle
1-Yellow Belly Turtle
Snakes:
1-Greenish Ratsnake
1-Eastern Ribbon Snake
2-Red Belly Watersnakes
1-Eastern Hognose
1-Cottonmouoth
1-Brown Watersnake
1-Brown Snake
1-Rough Green Snake
12-Southern Copperheads
1-Black Racer
and the highlight of the trip
1-HUGE Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake-wow-what a rush that was!!

There were a number of herps that just were so fast in the heat that all one could say was snake or frog or whatever.

It was great-the last time we went it was in a daught and we didn't see much that time-we did mostly road herping cos the mosquitos (there have to be more biting insects there than almost there then anywhere else I've ever been-but it was worth it!!)

We have mosquitos that show up in hordes along the beach that are easily nickel size. Then you also have the huge clouds of biting horse flies. But I am sure it is like that through most of the gulf coast beaches.

I just didn't think of it-when we went since the last time it was very dry-not that that is normal for there-duh on me!! I haven't been to TX but thanks for the warning though-note to self-buy more Deep Woods Off. LOL

I guess in the end I should be grateful-since our friends, who came with us, got into chiggers instead- major itchiness going on there.

give you something to do when you are bored. You always have something to scratch. I never mind them really (as long as they stay below the knees :-O ). The skeeters and flies are what really get me. I guess this year has been especially bad since we had about 2 weeks of solid, hard rain.

the night blooming cactus ( cereus species , none-reptile ) plus finding the biggest and spindly looking agaves ( century plant ) also there. It blew my mind that the agave could tolerate that much moisture and or humidity. Seed ticks on me for days because of them being so darn small......

but I'll fill in something here that would probably be argued. While I have not found EDBs in the Texas coatal area, I had a bud that did in fact find some while he lived there for 15 years. They may of been let goes ( like the WDBs of central Kansas being turning up ) but he lived in Rock Port Texas and drove a business truck up and down the coast ( north ) with the turn around of Orange Louisiana. I know that the EDB is not listed as native to Texas. But I have no reason to of ever doubt this person. He showed me Spiney Tailed Iguanas ( Ctenosaura ) in the Big Bend region back in 1972.
