Strange Behavior

Tarzana Jul 06, 2004 03:38 PM

A couple minutes ago Racso was in his cage in my bedroom, and I was sleeping. I woke up to him scratching on the glass and standing on his hindlegs. I got up, and gave him my arm to climb on. I took him out of the cage and put him on my bed. That is the only other place he goes in my room. I sat on the bed with him like I usually do, and he started running around and tasting everything. He ran on me a couple times and then he started to get worked up. His beard got dark, and he looking like he was investigating. I went to put him back in his cage and he puffed his beard out once. To distract him I threw him a waxworm and he ate it. After he finished it I picked him up and put him back in his cage. I watched him for a minute and he started scratching at the glass again. Does anyone know why he is acting like this? If I let him investigate on my bed, will he know enough not to jump off? Thankyou for any explanations. -Kara

Could be any number of things but I wouldn't worry about it. If he's young he could be getting a surge of hormones. Has anything in your room changed?

No, I doubt if he'll know enough not to jump off. I'd just let him go but if he gets close to the edge keep an eye on him. You can usually tell when they're about to make a move.

If they scratch on the glass and want to get out often, something may be wrong with the enclsure. How big is it? Adult beardies need a certain amount of space. As for puffing up his beard some are moodier than others. Chances are if he jumped off your bed he would be fine, unless you have an extremely high bed with an extremely hard floor.

The enclosure is a 40 gallon breeder. He is a petite male beardie, and seems to fine in the enclosure. The temp. gradient is fine also, so I can't really see a problem with anything. He hasn't done it since that time, but I'll be watching.
