New to FBTs with a couple questions

Xandras_Zoo Jul 06, 2004 05:50 PM

Hello!
I've recently purchased a FBT (Fred) and an FBN (George). They're living together. The toad doesn't show any aggression toward they newt, and they're in a 20 gallon. Infact, they don't come in contact with eat other much, and I feed my toad lots. Do I still have to worry about the toad eating the newt?

I need some ideas for an interesting aquarium! Mine is very boring. It's got blue and green gravel and a jungle background, and a waterfall and a plant that hangs. What do the critters like? What should I give them to make them happier?

Could I breed my toad or newt (with another of the same speicies, of course)? How do I tell the difference between a girl and a boy? What's a baby newt called?

Do you guys know of any good links on the care of either the FBN or FBT?

TYIA,
Alexandra

i don't think there is any worry with the toad eating the newt, but the toads are agressive eaters, and when housed with the newt, could accidentially grab it.Make sure the newt is eating. Also make sure you change water frequently b/c even though a lot of pet stores do it, they newt and toad should not be housed together. The toad has irritating toxins and could actually hurt the newt if it is built up in the water too long.good luck

It may not be too safe to keep them together. I put two FBN with two FBT in a 25G tank and fed them all lots of food. The first few days were fine, but about 5 days after buying the newts, we came out to find one of them dead, missing a leg. I returned the other newt to the store so it wouldn't happen to him.

I read somewhere that the toads hunt by movement and will grab onto anything that moves (including fingers) and chomp it down --that may be why the newts do so badly in the same tank as the FBTs.

Good luck
Oopy
