Chicks as food

desiguana2 Jul 06, 2004 06:06 PM

Does any one have any or had any problems with feeding their Red-Tails baby chickens? I have a local supplier of chicks. They are a supply store for Reptiles, birds, farm animals, and rodents. They breed and sell chicks, mice, rats, and rabbits. All of these in frozen form as well as live. Their chicks are the same price as mice, so i was wondering if any one had any objections to feeding a 5' boa chicks. I don't think salmonella would be a problem as it is a specialty store using them as feeders.

I am not sure if it would be harmful outside the Salmonella factor. One thing though I think chicks are higher in fat content but do not know for sure.

Chicks that are still fuzzy I'd feed, I'm not crazy about feathered ones though as the snake doesn't digest the feathers and I get worried about blockages/etc from them.

Overall a varied diet is bound to be a good thing, I'd even feed feathered ones from time to time.

Chicks are a normal food for boas and feeding them as a whole animal should not really be a problem, but a 5' boa will need bigger then a baby chick, more like a small chicken (a pound or so in weight)
good luck
