Tail Dropping?

I was told by a not-so-trustworthy sourch that Tegus can drop their tails just like geckos. Is this true because I have grabbed my Tegu by the tail several times (only when he is about to go somewhere he isnt supposed to) and he has yet to drop it. Myth or reality? Thanks!
