feeding question

Nicko Jul 06, 2004 10:57 PM

Hi, I got a new corn snake almost 2 weeks ago and I'm having trouble getting it to feed. I waited 4 days or so to let it adjust to his new home, and then tried feeding but had no luck.

I've tried feeding in his 15 gallon tank, and also in a smaller kritter keeper with no success. Like I said, its been almost two weeks since I got him, should I be worried? I have small pinkies I ordered from rodentpro, so I dont know if I can get anything smaller.

oh, he's about a month old

are your temps right? does he/she have hiding places to feel secure? some babies will feel 'lost' in a large enclosure. i kept my 2 corns in 10 gallon tanks for several months till switching them to something bigger. just some thoughts...

i've upped the temp on the warm end a bit, but I know I am pretty close. I also have a hide spot on both ends of the tank.

is to place the pinky in a paper lunch bag overnight with the snake. Just fold over the top of the bag (so it will be dark) and place everything back in the tank. Don't check on it at all until morning. Some snakes are shy feeders and the darkness and quiet will often make them feel secure enough to eat. Usually by morning the pinky is gone.

Good luck!

is he going to shed?? sometime snakes will not eat if they are in the shedding mode. I don't even bother to feed when one of mine is going to shed. My honduran milk will not eat at that time. My python is also in the sheding mode and is in hiding right now. It can take some 10 days to 2 weeks from starting to cloud up to shedding.
When my corns were babies they would shed about every 5-6 weeks. By the time my python sheds, then I feed her it will be 3-4 weeks. As long as your little snake is good weight it should be ok. If it's not going to shed then try live. (I don't know what your feeding. I feed frozen/thawed).
Just another idea....

Our latest additions are nearly 2 months old now and the first time we fed them they ate no problems, but the second time, one of them refused the pinkie. We tried 2 or 3 times over the next week or so, and one morning, after leaving him yet again in a small tub, in the dark, overnight, the pinkie had gone. The next day, his eyes clouded, and we're now waiting for him to shed. The other one has eaten every time, even with 'blue' eyes, so I reckon you'll just have to be patient keep trying. I wouldn't worry too much yet, as long as he's drinking ok.

I was just wondering how often are you trying to feed your snake. I mean, could it be you are stressing it out by offering food too often?

Nicko Jul 07, 2004 06:58 PM

Im offering a pinky about every 3 days or so, trying not to stress it out like you said, unless that's too often

wait at least every 5-6 days. could be it's just not hungry eating every 3 days. that also doesn't give it enough time to digest.

Nicko Jul 07, 2004 10:36 PM

I'm not planning on feeding every 3 days, thats just how often i've been trying to get him to eat for the first time for me
