kittys and beardys...........................................................

herpluver Jul 07, 2004 01:17 AM

well we have had our beardys for 2 years and this last weekend we "adopted" a kitty we found in the road. so my question is.... is there any chance they can be in the same room or will the cat stress our the beardys? she is only 6 weeks old and i think i could train her that the beardys are a no-no but will the sight of the cat be too much for the beardys?

I dont think the site of the cat would be to much but the claws of the cat would.

I think it probably depends on the individual beardies & the cat. My purely anecdotal evidence is that Oolong pays absolutely no attention to any of our 11 cats, in or out of his cage, despite the fact that a cat was trying to eat him when we first found him. :}

I would definitely camp out next to the beardie enclosure w/ a squirt gun for a couple of days, though. All of our cats are pretty good about leaving Oolong's cage alone, now, but they were very curious at first, & would do everything from tapping on the glass to climbing up on the screen top if they got a chance. Our youngest just turned a year old, so their super-crazy kitten months are behind them... your kitty might take longer to learn to leave the beardies alone. Would it be possible to keep the kitten out of the room the beardies are in, at least until she settles down & learns the rules of the house?

Oh, & hooray for rescue pets! :D

I don't think it would be a problem especially starting with a cat that young. Your beardie doesn't know what a cat is, so he or she would probably get used to having the cat around so long as it didn't pose a threat to him. My cat's biggest interest in the dragons is using their house as something to rub up against. He's never shown any signs of being aggressive toward them. My dog doesn't care much about them either. She rarely even comes downstairs where they are. She only sees them if it's really hot out and she comes down to the basement to lay on the cool floor. They do seem to want to know who is doing that mysterious screaming that comes from my room. They've never had any contact with my bird though, because I suspect they all might give each other a little too much attention.

I have two cats who are completely different (I call them my city cat and my country cat---because one came from a pet store in the city and the other from the farm!)

Now country cat will kill EVERYTHING she comes into contact with. However, she is also trained by my snap to back away. She has tried to attack my beardie, my snake (all when they were babies). Once my snake was old enough and big enough to show her he wasn't affraid, she hasn't had anything to do with him. My Beardie was always afraid of her, but she knew her distance and never hurt him. My Beardie even knew I was a sense of protection (he would run to me when he felt scared by her). It worked out.

City cat: She is AFFRAID of everything. She tried to smell my corn snake (when he was a baby), they touched noses. There was a shock...each thought the other had done it and nothing more ever came of it. City cat didn't even know about the Beardie until he was grown. She looked at him...he puffed up and she ran into the other room (never to be seen by him again)...quite funny....

it just depends on the cat as well.

I think you should allow the kitten to explore while the Beardie is in the cage. Once she sees there is nothing to see, she will move on to more exciting things. (BEWARE: DON'T allow your kitty to be on top of the cage near the UV bulb. UV light can cause permanent damage to cats. The warning signs are continous watery eyes...just like allergies, clear water...no discharge. I had my cat to vet for this and the vet told me about it).

After a little while you can have your beardie out and they can explore each other. (just be there to protect EVERYONE). who knows, maybe they will tolerate each other well (especially since the kitten is so young).

It was very difficult for my wife in our first two weeks married. So the cat went to the pound, and after a suitable mourning period, I got beardies. Probably too many beardies.

This is the male, Sunbeam, who along with all his 3 girls were lined up on the carpet in a nice little row when I got home.

I had collared lizards and my wife had flying geckos. One flying gecko survived. Oh and one silly parrot that only likes one person. Don't worry, I'm getting a tree boa.

I thought I would really miss her, but I only had her six months so it wasn't as hard to get over her as I expected.

Predators are cool but they can cause compatibility problems.

I wish you the best of luck in your decision and the outcome!!!

So you had your cat killed and lost some lizards because you weren't responsible enough to make sure the cat couldn't get at them?
