Herman Tort / Boy or Girl?

Becki71 Jul 07, 2004 09:27 AM

Hi! How old does a Herman tort have to be before you can tell what sex they are? I heard it isn't until they were about six or seven years old but I see that some torts can be sexed earlier. Does anyone know? Thanks!!!

Wow! We both posted our hermanns tortoises questions at the same time!

I have a 4 year old that I'm certain is a male. It was incubated to be female & even has 4 scutes instead of 5, which sometimes happens when incubated at higher temperatures. This past spring he started trying to mount everything in the pen with him so I got online & did some research & became convinced he's a male.

So obviously they can be sexed earlier than 6 years old.

LOL...that is just too weird! Thanks for the info! It's good to know I might be able to tell what sex he/she is sooner. He (?) isn't even a year yet so we still have time. I was just curious since I saw him yesterday and it looked like he was trying to mount my younger tort. I'm sure he was just trying to climb over her but it did look suspicious. Thanks again!
