how long should a yearling be?

janome Jul 07, 2004 09:40 AM

I have a tangerine dream honduran. He was hatched last year in July. He seems so much smaller then my corns were at a year old. He is approximately 24 inches long. Is this about right?
I have a hard time getting him to eat more then 2 fuzzies at once. (Just becasue he is a nervous creature). Although the last time I feed him I got him to eat 4 fuzzies. It was after his last shed and he was really hungry I guess.
This was also the first time I got him to eat while I was watching him so I managed to stick a fuzzies in his mouth as he was swallowing the one before. He is doing great otherwise. I was just concerned about his size.

You are trying too hard.. the snake will be fine eating just once a week. Its size is not an issue if it is otherwise healthy and feeding as Hondurans normally do. Don't be so concerned about the length of the snake, and don't try to stuff it all the time.

Just for comparison, I got a yearling Cal king from a pet store. The snake was fed maybe once per two weeks if that, and was very small. 4 years later under my care at a normal feeding schedule and it is nearly 4 ft long. So in the end, the snake is fine. Your Honduran at 1 year is much larger than that king was.

but i haven't been feeding him 4 fuzzies all the time. this was the first time. he has been eating 2 once a week. i was just wondering if he was on the small side. i guess it doesn't really matter since he is just a pet

My sinaloan will be a year old the end of August and is about 24 inches long, too. No feeding problems, s/he eats once a week and just started taking a 5th pinke which sounds like about the same amount of food.

This is a pic of a 0.1 Hypo Honduran that hatched July 4, 2003. She's 34" long and weighs 225 grams and eats a f/t hopper mouse every 4 days. I also have her sister who is 26" long, but she just plain eats less. I bought a yearling 1.0 Honduran in May 2003 who was 23" when I got him. He is now 45" and 450 grams. Your snake probably falls into the "normal range" for his age, but don't worry cause they grow fast!

thanks so much for your reply and photo. yours looks like mine (or visa versa) I have mine housed in a 20 gallon long tank with an UTH. I had a light on him but bulbs burnt out. He seems fine with out the light anyway.
