Ontogenetic change in Kings...

Keith Hillson Jul 07, 2004 09:42 AM

Much like the Florida King and the Speckled the Outer Banks Kingsnake starts out looking like a regular Eastern King. As they grow they go thru whats called ontogenetic change where another color or pattern comes thru with each shed. The first pic is one of my 2003 males at about 3 months old. He was a problem feeder so he is still small but now eats like a pig and he is putting on some size and polka dots .

Approx. 3 Months old.

I used to look for a general scrambling of the chain pattern latterally as well as some speckling along the neck as indicators that a neonate would grow into a "classic" OBX king. That little fella showed potential from the get go! Nice looking snake Keith.

I kinda thought this one wouldnt be that speckled as he showed hardly any speckling. This male is the product of one of Carl's original animals bred to a new unrelated female. He was starting to do some outcrossing right before he sold all his animals and this was one of those outcrossed Kings. The bulk of Carls breeders went to Bob Johnson (Reptile Artistry) so its nice they for the most part stayed together. The unrelated female belongs to Will Still. She is not the most speckled animal but is very pretty. Oddly enough Bob also got a bunch of Carl's Temporalis from you as well.
