my ghost is still restless

janome Jul 07, 2004 09:52 AM

I posted a message about my male ghost being restless. Some replies were to feed him or his looking for a mate. Well, when I feed him he is in a hiding place for a day or two then is out an about again looking for a way out. I don't want to over feed him and him getting fat.
He is housed in a 20 gallon long tank (30"x13". I was wondering if getting him a little bit bigger enclosure would help him not to be so 'wanting out'.
I saw a tank that was 24"x24" square(as apposed to the 20 gallon long) and about 12-13" high. Would this help or would sometime like a 40 gallon tank(don't know the inches) be better?
Only problem is I don't really have space for a 40 gallon but do have space for the 24x24 tank.

he is at least 3 foot long and eating adult f/t mice. Here is a photo I've posted before..Thanks.

Other's are right, it probably is due to him looking for a mate, but fortunately, the breeding season is almost over, so he should be calming down soon.

I don't know how often you were feeding, but I only feed my adult males one mouse every 14-21 days.

I also wouldn't worry about getting a larger cage. Your snake would probably appreciate as large of a cage that you would give him, but it's not going to stop him from trying to get out. The 24x24 cage really isn't all that much bigger anyway.

I have been feeding my corns and milk once a week. Is that to often? Maybe I should cut back to every 2 weeks. Also can you tell by my photo if he is an adult yet. I bought him from kathy love at a reptile show and she said he was about 3-4 months old when I got him. that was year and a half ago. Don't really remember. Thanks.

Yep, I would say that he qualifies for an adult.

He doesn't look fat, but if he were mine, I'd probably cut back the feedings to at least every 10-14 days. I've always loved huge snakes, but I've also realized that corns really aren't meant to be huge. In my opinion, the body should be lean and the belly should square off, not bulge out. I'll give females a little more leeway, since they are expected to put so much into egg laying. Though it has been said that fit females are much better equipped to lay eggs than fat ones.

As I already said my males are fed every 14-21 days.

I do feed my females differently though. Out of breeding season, the females are feed every 10-14 days, but during breeding season, I've been known to feed as often as every 3-4 days (much smaller food items though), just to put much needed weight on them before and after they lay eggs.

My ghost has the same head marking and I named her GAP, pretty funny, thought they would have different patterns. Mine is restless and although a baby when i try to get it out of the cage, it will strike at me, so i use a branch to transfer to the feeding container.
