Tomato hornworms

dynamohum1 Jul 07, 2004 01:15 PM

Does anyone have any info on using these as feeders. More specifically any links to reliable information about tomato plant fed worms being toxic? I found one website selling these that claims toxicity when fed tomato leaves, I am having trouble finding any other information to back this up. There are several organic farms nearby that will allow you to pick your own worms and of course since you are doing what they do anyway it is free.

I guess I should clarify this post, I would like to collect these guys and then gutload something other than tomato leaves in the hopes that if there are toxins they will not be present when fed to the dragons.

Well I know for a fact that tomato leaves are toxic, that is why sellers of hornworms use s hornworm chow that is not toxic instead of the leaves.

Here is a link:

I got the link by just going to a search engine and typing in toxic tomato plants. So if you want more links you can do that.

As to weather or not if you feed them other food and they will no longer be toxic, I really don't know. I think that is a question that I would ask maybe a vet.

I found several links once I searched for tomato plant leaves toxic, I was looking for toxic hornworms links. I also ran across achameleon site that suggests collecting and then feeding the worms on bell peppers for a week before using as feeders.

Mullberryfarms.com sells the hornworm chow. That's about all I know about the worms.
