Stumped about sav... please help me.

GaiasPriestess Jul 07, 2004 04:10 PM

My male savannah monitor, Trouble, has been having some problems. He throws up everything he eats. I usually feed him two frozen/thawed mice once a week. Sometimes he gets crayfish as a treat, because they're his favorite food. He has been throwing up nearly every time since August. I have him in a 6 foot long converted horse trough. The middle of the top is a big wooden door, and the ends are screened so I can put lights on top. On one end he has a full spectrum UV bulb and a 100W white light. Those are on for roughly 12 hours each day. On the other end is a 150W red bulb. That is on constantly. I don't know my exact temperatures because I've lost my thermometer for the time being. He has a few inches of peat moss for substrate, a cork bark hide, a cat litter water pan, and some other decorations. I took him to the vet last week, and the vet said he had no idea what was wrong with him, as do I. He does not act differently (no more skittish or lethargic than usual, no more aggressive, no signs of pain in specific body areas). He has not lost a lot of weight just from looking at him, but I don't have a sensitive enough scale to weigh him with. I had the doctor draw blood and test it for cell counts, etc. He said everything looks fine except that Trouble is borderline anemic, but he said that even that is debatable. The cell count for anemia was on the lower end of the acceptable range. I haven't brought in a fecal sample because he does not poop since he has nothing in him. The doctor suggested that we could do X-rays, a stomach wash (which is very invasive and he would have to be put under for), or general dewormers. It's been a while since I've read up on reptile medicine, but I remember reading that reptiles do not do well under anesthetic, and that giving an animal medicine it doesn't need can hurt it more than help it. I'm kind of skeptical on the stomach wash and dewormers because of this, but I opted to try for deworming. My appointment is for tomorrow afternoon. If anyone has any suggestions... anything I may be missing... please let me know. I don't know how old Trouble is because his growth is severely stunted from the "care" he received before I got him, but he's roughly two feet long including his tail, which has been broken off about halfway down. I'll try to get some pictures of him and of the cage as soon as possible. Thanks.

Heather

This has been going on since August!!???? I'm sorry but it could be something as simple as not enough heat to something as severe as Crypto (Cryptosporidium). A diagnosis will not come over the internet. You need to take you monitor to another vet for a second opinion. How long does it take from the time he ingest the food till he gurges it back up?
Get a temp gun ASAP and see what your temps are at. If they are too low boost them and quick. Your basking should be at 120-135, ambient 90, cool side not below 80. You can find temp guns on Pro Exotics's web site and a few others. You local reptile/pet shop may even have them. Even a place like Home Depot or Lowes might carry something like that.
Best of luck with Trouble! Get him to a vet!!!!

Radio shack will come closer to haveing the temp gun than home depot im my experience. But you could always get one cheaper from P.E. Just call them.

Well as was said see a vet, another vet.

Throwing up is not normal so there must be something going on.
It really would help to know your temps. . For example the others say not hot enough. Well with a 100watt bulb your big red 150watt bulb and a full spectrum here with my setups it would fry my reptiles. Those red bulbs are great for making beef jerky.

Check your humidity, and temps. ambients basking.

Get it to a different vet.

Good luck
