One of my female redfoots has been digging around in the her provided nest box for the past two weeks but has laid no eggs. The soil in the nest box was only 3" deep. Last night, I finally installed a much deeper nest box with 9" of soil/vermiculite mix. I woke up this morning to 9 eggs. I guess she really was holding out for the right spot to lay them. This is the first batch of eggs I've gotten. They are huge, white, and look awesome. Any idea what would have happened if I had never given her a bigger nest box? Would she have eventually laid them anyway?
