Fruit flies...? Got some but i'm confused, please help, my frogs need food!

leapfrog Jun 20, 2003 08:47 PM

My mom stopped by petco today and asked for flightless fruit flies. The person at petco got her this jar of "live fruit flies" that are "betta food" but on the back says "great for small reptiles and amphibians..." So, i open the jar, and am extremely confused. Nothing inside looks like its moving, they like like dry, dead, 1 or 2 mm long white dots with two little tiny antannae or something on the front, but no legs, nothin. I'm just really confused... will my wood frogs eat them in the water or on land, if they eat them in the first place. i dropped some in the water and som eon the land. Of course the little "flies" didn't move, and i didnt see any of the frogs eat any on land. I'm not positive that they ate the ones in the water either. Anyway, could someone please clear this up for me? Also -- petco was out of the fruit flies that i saw once in this jar in the fridge there. Are those the right ones...? They didn't have pinhead crickets either. :-/

Thanks,
ASB

sounds like your fruit flies are in their cacoon stage, they should start hatching anyday now,I have new flies hatching everyday.I feed my frogs on a damp paper towel, that makes it easier from the frogs to find them.If you don't have live flies in a day or two then take them back to the store and demand live ones.I've been finding itty bitty grasshoppers outside for food also.Hope this helps & good luck!
