Cricket maintenance...

heartsx2 Jul 07, 2004 06:19 PM

I built a cricket container (large tupperwear bowl with air holes and a tube that sticks out the top) and thought I would buy a dozen at a time. I feed them Flukers food and orange cubes. After a few days it looks as though it could use a food and water change. How exactly do I do this without loosing all the crickets??? And how long before it really needs to be cleaned or fresh food/water added? I don't want to risk mold or anything. And now I'm wondering what they do at the stores when they have hundreds of crickets in a large container?

Thanks!
Denise

To put it simple you need a bigger container so that when you open it up the crickets dont all jump out, have you ever seen the containers they keep them in at the pet stores they are big enough to fit a 4 year old kid in lol

Okay... but even with a bigger container, how do you clean it out? And how often does new food/water source need to be replaced? I'm only feeding 1 gecko...

I only buy enough crickets to last a week. Then I clean out the container every week before I buy a new batch of crickets.

They're a lot of maintenance, which is why I don't use them as a staple for most of my leos.

That's what I planned on doing -- just getting crickets once a week. But after just a few days it doesn't look very clean. If I can go a week without changing anything I should be okay. I just want to make sure I don't feed my gecko with "bad" food. I'm concerned about mealworms because I don't want them burrowing and creating a problem.

I put the gutload on one side, and the veggies on the other side so they don't come in contact. Then put a piece of egg carton in the middle. As long as the crickets aren't overcrowded, it should be okay.
