Looking into getting my first Iguana...

Lyn Jul 07, 2004 06:51 PM

Hello! I love animals, especially reptiles (as you can tell by my sig line). Lately I've been steering towards "rescue" cases, taking on pets that people don't want anymore. I took on two baby corn snakes yesterday. They aren't in my sig line because I am not sure if they will live. One has a badly deformed mouth, bad eye, and badly kinked spine. The other one was born with only one eye. That one should do fine. Both are a week and a half old and have not eaten yet. Say an extra prayer for them if you would! I knew that there were adult Iguanas in need of homes and have been thinking for a while now that the next time I heard of one I would look into it. I received an email from a lady who lives an hour or two away from me. She has a 6 year old Iguana in need of a home. She thinks it's a boy but isn't 100% sure. He's small for his age, only 2 1/2 feet long from snout to tail tip. He lives in a large dog cage with shelves, but she lets him out when she's home. I would build him a larger home made enclosure if I get him, although it might take a while to get one built. I'm anxiously awaiting a photo of him, and word of how soon I could get him. I don't really have any questions right now, there are plenty of books and websites with the information I need, plus I have friends with Iguanas and can get info from them too. One of my friends does wildlife rehab and adopted an Iggy who was horribly deformed due to MBD. She saved it's life and he's doing great. Will never recover from the deformities though. I don't know if MBD could be an underlying reason that this Iggy is so small. I haven't asked the owner whether she uses Calcium and UV. I did ask what his favorite foods were in an attempt to get a feel for what he is being fed. I am sorry for the ramble. I guess the gist of my post is to say hi to everyone. I'll post again as soon as I can get a photo of him...

Welcome to the list DO you know if the iguana is 2.5' STL or if he dropped a tail..? He may be a perfectly full grown iguana, but be short because of a tail loss. (We can hope!)

Good luck when you get him. Dont forget a vet visit to get a baseline-poor guy sounds like he could really use one
