Snake Species Question...

MissMiniZoo Jul 07, 2004 10:34 PM

Just out of curiosity, are there any snakes that do not feed on mice (pinkies and larger)? I really like snakes, but I don't want to have to keep buying pinkies and feeder mice. I don't have a problem with it, but would rather not have to deal with it. Even if I do get a snake it won't be for awhile anyway...but I was just curious. Thanks for taking time to read my post!

There are many species of snakes that do not feed on mice. For example, garter snakes feed on earthworms, frogs, salamanders, fish, and slugs in the wild. Water snakes feed on fish. There are many others.

Rodent eaters are most commonly kept in captivity because their food is relatively easy to get and many adjust well to captive conditions and handling. Garter snakes adjust fairly well to captivity, but their food is not so easy to get if one lives in a city. That's why many captive garters are trained to take pinky mice.

Caught a green snake when I was a kid. Fed it crickets, grasshoppers and mealworms and just about any other bugs I could find, had it for years.
