If they keep messing with it enough maybe everybody will just go away and then it will be simple for them. Can't say I like this.

When was the last time they changed things and I do think they've done something for the better. Play with it a bit. There are a bunch more controls and options. It's kinda neat. You also would be very hard pressed to find another forum that can boast this kind of longivity record.
I just went through this class at work not too long ago where they were trying to convince us that change is good. In certain industries (this being one of them) it is good. You can either change or be left behind.

I was about to post to a question from a previous post, & got transfered here.
I generally subscribe to the old adage, "If it's not broken, don't fix it".
I guess we'll get used to it.
Cheers, Max

Unfortunately with the new system we could not transfer the old posts from the old forums to this one. However, the techs are in the process of archiving those old posts so that folks still have access to them through a search database.

I don't have a problem with most changes Ed. It was not so long ago that you came on here and had start logging on... I didn't have a problem with that either, now I come on today to find all the post that were there yesterday gone and if you can find what you want with search you will be lucky being that a search never works that well on a forum most of the time so the only way to really find what you wanted is to go thru the long process of reading them all again... just my opinion and I have a right to it.

The search feature on the new system is proving to be much better and more accurate than the old one ever could be. You will have more control on things now.
One thing that is different is that on the old system you could only search for posts that had scrolled off the page and had to wait for them to be archived which could take days or weeks after they were initially scrolled off. Now you have the ability to search for current posts that haven't scrolled off.
No longer is there a risk for people on highly active forums to lose out on some discussions because something might have scrolled off the page in one or two day's time - you can now pull up posts by dates and even time frames.
If I want to pull up posts that were made only during today I can do that easily now. I don't have to scroll through an entire forum or several forums looking at dates and times of every single message for today's info if I don't want to. I can now just click on a link and pull up today's posts! If I want to pull up all posts that were made since the last time I logged into the system, or made an hour ago, or 60 days ago I can do that too. I can even search the forums for posts by words contained in the body of the message or even by the author's name.
Essentially the basic fundamental design of the old forums still exist here on the new format it is just that there are now a lot more options available to users to customize things to their individual tastes. After a while you find youself settling into a pattern that appeals to you.

Well, it seems ok to me so far - I like the tools and toys icon. Does the post expire the same as the others? It appears to be flowing just like the original. I guess time will tell. Lets see what tool or toy shall I use - how about this

Currently on the new forums each page can hold up to 25 topics and however many responses that may result from those 25 discussions. From my experiences when browsing the old forums, the pattern I used to see was that on the really fast paced forums only the topmost 30-40 topics on average out of the 150-200 so topics displayed were really the 'active' ones still getting responses to them by the users.
We are still in the process of fine tuning the programming in relation to the expiration (scrolling off) of the messages into the archives. The expiration is based on a time factor (15, 30, or 45 days, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 9 months, 1 year and never).
Right now all of the forums are set to never expire. As people use the forums and the number of topics increase they will simply be rolled over to a new page (page 2, page 3, page 4, etc.). My goal is to have the forums average between 5-10 pages worth of topics, but that number of pages may be reached in a much shorter time frame on some very active forums as compared to less active forums. I will be monitoring the activity of the various forums so that I can then start setting the appropriate expriation for each forum to best suit each forum's individual posting nature and keep the number of pages from getting out of hand.

why did your post end up at the bottom, and not below my message. Your message included my message. So the question is how do you respond to an individual post, and not have the response posted at the bottom of the thread - I may be wrong, but this is the way it appears - please clarify.
Thanks,
Bill Griffin

Perhaps you have toggled the manual thread/non-thread link on the forum index page or have set your user prefernces to show non-thread view ?
In 'non-thread mode, all response posts are simply listed in straight chronological order under the topic post with no sub-threading at all.

I do like the way all of the replies are now displayed.
This morning I clicked on the bookmark in my menu bar for the forum & got nothing. I had to go to the Kingsnake main page & navigate to the forum from there.
It wont take long before we all get used to it.
