I know a 130f or more basking for an adult is fine but how about hatchlings?..

christien216fm Jul 08, 2004 11:07 AM

I believe i read somewhere that if their bodies exceed a certain temp that it would kill them. Someone please correct me if im wrong. I thought it was in one of Daniel Bennets books but can seem to find it so it may be something i read on the net but i'd just like to be sure before set up my basking area. Thanks

I have always set mine up with pretty much the same choices on a smaller scale of the adults. It has worked fine.

As for high temps. being deadly that would be more ambient temps then basking. A basking site is only one area that can be gone to or away from. If your animal does not move from that spot when it needs to then the rest of the cage has something wrong.
A healthy animal will go to and leave that area as needed. If you have the entire cage heated to high it can quickly kill young and adults.

The first and foremost step in keeping reptiles is to learn they thermoregulate and what all that means.

I do not have all of my monitors setup with the exact same temps. or basking temps. I go by each individual monitor.

Hope this helps
