Yellowfoot male too agressive?

tortman Jul 08, 2004 11:53 AM

Hi
I have 3 yellowfoot torts. 2 males and 1 female. The one male and female I recieved about 2 months ago. The other male I have had for 3 years.
I put the old male with the new pair this monday and he was doing the head bob thing and trying to mount the female. The only problem is that he wouldn't stop. He did this for like 2 hours before I took him away and put him back in his own enclosure. Is this normal? I don't want him to stress himself or the female. Plus I am worried he will stop eating and just harass the female.
Please let me know your thoughts........Aaron

My male yellow foot is constantly on top of my young (male I thing) redfoot tortoise and occassionally on my adult female. All Day every day with time to out to take a quick soak, eat, defecate and then right back to business. My little guy is unphased by all this and just eats, drinks and moves about with this other tortoise on his back. He never seems stressed or even overly concerned about it. My big female will cut him so much slack and when she has enough she will flip him over and walk away. Then he rights himself and pursues the little guy.

My guess is that you should just be observant and see how much your female is bothered by this activity or if both males are pursuing her at the same time.

YOU'RE MIXING SPECIES!?!?!?!?!?!? (steve)

Both RFs and YFs are very active and aggressive. Try and give them as much space as possible. Also, make sure there are visual barriers like big rocks or logs that can break the line of sight between the two.

Why Ed -- what are you implying? Are you calling me a fanatic?!!?? LOL!!! Guess I have to turn in my union card huh? YES YES I confess I mixed similar species with similar requirements from the same basic part of the world. Can the purists ever forgive me? LOL!!! Guess what? I have map turtles living with Red eared sliders, River cooters AND yellow bellied sliders. That's it my name is MUD!!!
