Southern Alligator Lizard....Help!

lil_frogger2 Jun 20, 2003 09:39 PM

I have a Southern Alligator lizard, he/she is about 5 inches from head to base of tail, I think. I haven't had a chance to really accurately measure, but it's close. I have been feeding it 3 week old crickets. So far it's eaten about 4 crickets, so how much should it eat and how often?

Also, I have been reading that they are very ornery and bite when scared. Mine hasn't bitten me yet and I've held it a lot cause he/she likes to sit o my arm, it's very tame. How about everyone else that has one? Do your's bite?

One more thing, does anyone know how to sex on of these lizards? Thanks!!

Looks like a female to me but I could be wrong. The care sheets I have read say they will take about 40 crickets a week. My lizards eat a lot but I have not counted. I buy 150 crickets every 2 weeks to feed my 2 S. Aligator lizards and 2 grass lizards so 40 a week sounds about right. Mine will bite under any circumstances even more so when they are scared. All it takes is to reach your have in or around the cage and my female will rear up her head and hiss with her mouth wide opend. Hope this helps. You might get a better responce if you post in the aligator lizard forum but I believe I have answerd all of your questions
