Did you choose those two species cause of the low price? Just wondering as both of them have the cheapest starting price. But be warned you'll spend hundreds or thousands after your initial purchase. i.e. food , cage, and possably vet bills.

If you've already looked into that, then from what you say it comes down to looks? This will be a personal preference. But keep in mind sav's are all basicly the same in color and only vary slightly. Niles color and pattern has alot more variations.
I have some extremely yellow niles and some real nice blue niles.

The other thing to come into play would be size and attitude. Savs are smaller and less likely to be stubborn and offensive. They may become defensive tail whip hiss. But the nile also has a good offense of charging and biting.

I suggest you study up on both and think about what fits YOUR needs.

If your looking for something with a docile temperment, then you should stick with the species known for that. Niles are not known for that and docile is an exception with them. It is much easier to find a needle in a box of needles then in a bail of hay.

I agree with blootbat, it's probably better to start with a smaller cage if you're getting a young sav. A 40 or 55 gallon would be great, but they grow real fast in the right conditions in the first year, so you have to be prepared to put him in a larger cage.
Savs make great pets if you give them the right care and attention. Just make sure you have all your temps right and your enclosure is not too dry. If you're cage is too dry, and your temps are as high as they should be your monitor will quickly dehydrate. To help solve this, don't use a screen lid because it lets all the humidity right out.
Also as bloodbat said, dont' get one that seems tame when it's young because it could mean that it's already ill. You should buy one that is active and even a little fiesty. Leave him alone for a couple of weeks in his cage when you bring him home (don't handle him or take him out of his hide boxes). After he gets aquainted with his new surrounding and seeing you, you can start to handle him little by little.
Good luck.
