the beardy that we thought had leukemia. liver problems help

herpluver Jun 20, 2003 09:53 PM

well i didn't think he did, the vet did. and i was right. i thought it had something to do with calcium, and in a round about way i was correct. his liver enzyme's are elevated and liver problem causes problems with vitimin D(sp?). and since D3 effects calcium.

so now i need info on liver problems. would love to here from someone that has dealt with it.

thanks
Samuel

that can be a big range, from blocked bile ducts due to coccidia or many things to liver failure due to long term diet problems or gout.

Some are treatable, some you can only maintain like the gout.

We have a year old dragon that has gout but its fairly controled with two meds.... we caught it shortly after he was bought but ut does cause damage and the best we can hope is to maintain him

he just said the liver enzymes were slightly raised. and said he wanted to try anitibiotics and a liver med. sorry i don't have more info but i got all the info from a answering machine.

i've been talking to a few ppl that have said a good amount of sun light could help also

but when you said antibiotics and liver meds, make me think it he is leaning toward it being gout related. The link below is to a post were I was discussing these meds with another animal rehabilitator who had an chameleon and it ends with a Vet making some comments about the liver drugs used and doseages.

You can see if this is one of the drugs he is going to use on yours and if it is, contact me and I can let you know how we have done with them on out bearded dragon. Actually he has done fairly well once we adjusted the dosages.
Allopurinol and Probenecid with diet control

A natural herb 'Milk Thistle' administered by some vets to detox liver damaged by drugs and contaminants.

You can check the search engines and read up on it

so does that fact that he wants to use that tell you anything?
i did some looking and it seems to be used for thing that can be fixed/repaired. he is closed on weekends so i want all the info i can get when i go in monday, so i can accually "talk shop" with him and know what he is saying.

thanks you so much for all the help

me think, whats going on with the dragon is not that serious.

there are no real scientific studies on bearded dragons and meds for liver diseases or dysfunctions... what is used is meds that have been used in the past on humans or furry animals. He may be trying some things that cannot hurt to see if it helps any, prior to trying meds that there are no real studies on..

WHatever you do, keeping the dragon well hydrated will help flush the liver and kidneys out. Was a fecal done and clear?

herpluver Jun 21, 2003 07:24 PM

he loves to drink so keeping him hydraited will not be a problem and yes we had a fecal done, its all clean. well i guess all we can do is wait till monday, so i can talk to the vet. i will keep you posted, thanks again.

I had a dragon die of fatty liver disease, its a long battle of medication and alot of TLC. My first diagnosis was of impaction and also saying their was a problem with calcium but after xrays you could see that their was nothing wrong with her calcium levels and that she hadn't some of the strongest bone structure he had seen in a beardie. The problem with the disease my beardie had was the fact that its really hard usually to diagnosis or even see if anything was wrong. The disease can either stay hidden and suddenly you notice syptoms as I did or their are signs of problems to begin with. I would also talk to your vet about getting the xrays to make sure about its bone structure , also talk about the diet you have your dragon on. The diet is really important to me now that I know too much protein is a killer in captive herps, limit the amount of protein your beardie is getting make sure its getting daily healthy salads. Good luck with your dragon and I hope the treatments work out.
