" This is what you get for Buying 50% possible hets from VPI"

morphkingreptile Jul 08, 2004 03:12 PM

We purchased three 50% possible het for Genetic Stripe females from Tracy in 2001 raised them up and bred one of them to a Het male we purchased from Nerd, of the three females only one made it to weight for this season .. But we got lucky 5 eggs 1.1 perfect stripes and 1.2 66%ers...

It ALSO goes to show how REPUTABLE those two breeders are. That's VERY reassuring to many people out there. Way to go Wes and Joe, but also way to go Kev and Kara and Dave and Tracy!

the second project where they bred poss hets from us and hit the good odds. Last year they hit big on the caramel albino poss hets from us. This is the second person for the poss het stripes-last year Ian G. hatched two stripes from a poss het female and het male from us.

On the poss het note, here is a story even I don't believe!! I bred two MALES that were 100% het albinos 50% poss het axanthic to try and prove them out to be dh for snow. I bred each one to a female het axanthic. I could have gotten nothing but all kinds of poss hets or 25% hopefully would be axanthic 50% poss het albino. Now it would have been much smarter for me to breed an axanthic male to these females and produce axanthics and 100% het axanthics hopefully 1/2 and 1/2. But I thought I'd go for it.
One female laid 9 eggs, one female laid 6. Out of BOTH of the clutches 15 eggs total I hatched 9 axanthics poss het albino!!! I'm still in shock!! Those snakes at least 1/2 of them could be true het VPI snows! And now I know that both males are dh for snow!

When I hatched those poss dh male I wrestled with selling them-and I just couldn't make myself do it. Now I'm glad I kept them!

Should I sell or keep my two groups of 50% and 66% poss het patternless males....?!!!

"Should I sell or keep my two groups of 50% and 66% poss het patternless males....?!!!"

Do any of them look cinnamon like? Maybe white bellies?

How about the male het albinos possible het axanthics - where they reduced black backs or hypo xanthic or any other indication that they where likely to be het axanthic?

I'm thinking with experience one could significantly improve ones odds of picking hets from possible hets. Certainly not fool proof as even with piebald some hets don’t have the mark and some non-hets have something like it. But I’m starting to wonder if most “recessive” morphs don’t sometimes show in hets.

Perhaps if a person knew what a 100% het looked like they would never sell a 50% het.

If I KNEW what 100% hets looked like I don't think I would have sold the animals that made those guys the stripes, caramels, etc!! I would have kept them. I think the best strategy though is to purchase the males or females of the clutch if possible. That eliminates any selective chosing that may take place that someone could do BEFORE you get your pick!

Hard to say, you have to do the raising if it is a het or not-no short-cut!

My point exactly. If you knew you would make more money because the price of a 100% is more than a 50%. And also the ones that are not 100% hets you would sell as normals. I hope someone will produce a morph from some of my 50% morphs that I sold.

The poss het stripes have some markings on the head like the male het-but it could be a red herring. Like the axanthic and striped line-the "black backs" that are in both of those lineages is not related to whether they are a het or not-it is just an added bonus.

Tracy

Tracy Barker Jul 09, 2004 01:55 PM

thoses babies have markings like the dad-but the mom has no such markings-

jeff favelle Jul 09, 2004 02:32 PM

and no albino?? That's crazy. But if the odds are somewhat right, you've got PLENTY of axanthic dbl het for snows!! That's crazy!!

I remember those T-positives from last year!

All the best.
