My burm wont eat.

Make_Urself Jun 20, 2003 10:20 PM

Ok i recently bought a baby burm and have it housed with a red tail boa around the same size. They get along just fine. However its been a week now and i know its still eary but it doesnt show too much of an interest in food. No even a glance at the mice. Also, the boa tends to regurgitate its food. Any info on either case?

Seperate the two. No excuses. Burmese pythons and Red Tailed boas are two COMPLETELY different types of snakes and even if they get along, housing them together can bring a ton of problems. Seems like it might already be happening... The burm will *very* quickly out-grow the red tail and could seriously harm it.

The red tail throwing up could be a sign of internal parasites. They have bugs in their stomach/intestine so they cannot digest the food hence throwing it up. Bring both of them to the vet and get a fecal exam done of them both. If it is internal parasites, there are several different easy treatments which your vet can presribe to you. Left untreated, it will eventually kill your snakes as they cannot get any food digested.

If the red tail does indeed have internal parasites, your burm will most likely have it now too sine you've housed them together.

First get the internal parasites, if that is what it is, taken care of then worry about the feeding.

About the feeding. The burm might not be eating because it is way too stressed out, which can be caused by living with another snake. Or, something in the enviornment isn't correct (check your temps and humidity, make sure you have two or more hide boxes and fresh water available at *all times* Search online for a care sheet regarding both types of snakes)

Once the problem of parasites (if that is what it is) is fixed and they are each housed seperatly with proper cages.. and the burm still isn't eating. Try live, pre-killed and frozen mice of all different sizes and colors (yes, different sizes). Try at different times of the day. But NEVER leave a live mouse in the cage.

I hope this helps a bit.

I agree with every thing said except maybe the feeding live. Separate the 2 snakes, if you can't afford another enclosure get rid of 1 of the snakes. Both will require large enclosures as they grow, especially the burm. Sounds like you already have some problems, both should see a vet. If your boa is regurging wait at least 2 weeks before feeding again and then feed a smaller than normal prey. May have parasites or regurg syndrome.

You say they are juveniles, so maybe it is just stress and not internal parasites that causes your boa to regurge. Wait a while before the next feeding like Siberian said, and give her/him a single pinky rat or fuzzy mouse each week. This, after you have seperated the snakes. If you are in the Southern California area and are near Los Angeles I will give you a cage for free to house the burm in. If you don't live close by email me and I will run a few ideas by you for getting caging very cheaply. DON'T handle the snakes for several days after they eat! It's very important that they digest their meals undisturbed especially after having bouts with regurgitation.

The fastest way to achieve great wealth is by living more poorly for much longer.

Hehe nah i live in texas, but if u have info on tanks my email is e_sanchez1027@hotmail.com. It seems like i was the only naive one who thought snakes go well together lol. My mistake. I think its just stress as well. My boa seems to be a very picky snake, but overall healthy.

First off I hope you are not feeding them together, otherwise one of them will be gone soon. Are you feeding live or pre killed or frozen , and if you are feeding frozen how are you heating them up, If you heat one up to hot they can do that, also was the mouse to big for the boa, once I fed my baby boa a big mouse and he lost it. But check your temps, and humidity and as the others say get them seperated, and checked out. Because if your boa was fine and your burm was sick they both are now.
