hey the guy i got him from was a real jerk so i dont realy know many details its only a few months old and i dont know the sex, thx
well if it is youngster i would give him as much as he is willing too eat, try too give him varieted food, mice countain quite some fat especially young ones also feed some crickets and grasshoppers and every now and then some cat food, also make sure that you add supplements(minerals and vitamines) But watch his weight once he gets too fat(he shouldnt though) feed him less and relatively more insects. Give him a large bowl of water where he can soke in change that every day, and a hiding box must be there as well.
good luck,
regards danny
Hi.
Congrats on the new monitor.
Please don't rely too heavily on responses here to care for your lizard. You've got to learn all you can, and put some effort into it, if you want him to do well. Use the search box, look up words like roughneck and rudicollis. Get some books.
If yours is real young, feed daily. Crix are good, give the crickets good food and also dust them. You can try other feeder insects, but don't get all worried if yours doesn't eat them. They can be fussy. Pinkies are NOT full of fat, but older mice with fur provide more roughage and calcium.
Whether you feed pinks every day or once a week, it doesnt matter near as much as having the right temps available to the lizard. If high heat is an option for it, it will turn the food into faster growth. Lots of food and low temps (110) equals a little porker with a short life span.
Mice is a great staple food. You can feed other things sometimes, for your amusement, but as long as you know its only to please yourself. The monitor isn't being fed better. If you feed dog food (crap), you just wasted space in their belly that couldof held something nutritious. It won't kill them, you just wasted a day of their life, that they could have been growing.
This message is really basic, and I am inexperienced myself, but I have to say SOMEthing, because only newbies generally reply to these forums. There is a whole ton of info out there, keep learning, good luck. D.
