biting but not killing

newinside Jul 09, 2004 07:51 AM

As I said in some other post somewhere, I couple of weeks ago I a young blizzard (he is about 7-8 weeks old now). He was eating mealworms but then stopped, so we switched to crickets. He ate okay on the first couple of nights, but not great (3-4 crickets a night). Last night he was certainly interested in the crickets we put in, but for the first 5-6 crickets he grabbed, he would grab and bite them and then let them go. It wasn't like he was slow and they escaped him, in fact he completely stunned one and it didn't move after he dropped it for about 30 seconds. He did eventually eat and had 4. I am not nearly as worried as I was when I thought he might not actually eat any of them, but I am still not sure if I should be worried about this. Is this behavior normal?

Also, after very quickly eating the first waxworm I gave him about 1.5 weeks ago, he has been completely ignorning them (basically, just like the way he started completely ignorning the mealworms). Everything I have read said that they love waxworms. Should I be worried about this, too?

Thanks for actually taking the time to read this.

David

my 5 year old female just starting doing that this year too. She'll bit at the crix but barely hold on, she dropped them once but she eventually eats them.

If your leo is eating and its the first time he's done this then don't worry.

As long as he's eating and pooping then he's fine

Thanks.

I will keep my eyes on it and see if he does it again.

Sounds like you have yourself a picky eater. It looks like you're doing what you can already by giving him variety. You may want to try adding lobster roaches and superworms to the menu.

Where would I get lobster roaches? Also, can I get superworms in smaller sizes? All that I have seen for sale around here are very large and my leo is still pretty young and small.

Thanks for any advice you have.

Yes, you can but you usually have to ask for them in the smaller sizes. You might have to buy them in bulk too. That wouldn't be a problem because they can live over 6 months (without pupating), but it would still be a lot if this leo is your only insectivorous pet. Another alternative is if you know any regular vendors at a local herp show who sells feeder insects; you can try contacting them to see if they can bring small supers to the next show.

Superwormfarm.com sells small superworms, but I'm sure other online suppliers will sell them to you if you ask. Try wormman.com or grubco.com.

Small supers are attractive because they're the size of mealworms but MUCH more active. Don't buy too many though, because I've had leos get sick of them after 5 or 6 months.

As for lobster roaches, you can see ad listings on this site's classifieds section.

My guy that i got yesterday is about 2months old, he eats like 11 medium crickets a day. If you feed superworms i cut of the head or half, they still move alot!! My guy didn't eat the one i tried to feed him, but i think i was because he was full. My guy kill everytime,... well the crickets squirms a bit. Sometimes he misses because the crickets will jump and dodge...

I love how they rattle there tail really fast before pouncing.

Do they all rattle thier tails when they get ready to pounce or just males? Does it hurt if they bite you?
