My Macklot's had a run in with a mouse (which i stunned but still snagged him), tore open a flap of scales. It is red underneath but seems to only have broken the layer of scales as no bleeding, prob 1/4 inch at most. I can adjust the flap around to almost completely cover the exposed underpart as none of it ripped off, just fits right in, however it will not stay. As soon as he moves around the flap kind of rolls in on itself as the picture shows (sorry crappy phone camera), i put neosporin on it but how can i get the flap to stay in place, or should i not worry about it? also, does shedding replace such scales or will there be a scar...i read someone said liquid bandage but im not about to use that unless i hear it from others....thanx!

p.s. yes i know i will be killing not just stunning his food in the future, even this little scrape is freaking me out!

Ok, truth is I havent fed live for so long that there is no "routine", but here's what I would do for a wound like that.

Put on neosporin the first 2-3 days. Replace substrate with paper towels or newspaper. After 2-3 days I'd put hydrogen peroxide on the wound daily as needed.

Snakes have amazing healing ability and the wound that is pictured would probably heal just fine if left alone. Neosporin, paper substrate and peroxide are simple things you can do that will help reduce the chance of infection and make you feel like you're doing something helpful.

Good luck,

Doug T

I would clean it out with baby shampoo and then tape the skin back to it's natural place using the tape part of a band-aid. I wouldn't use peroxid because it burns tissue. Leave the tape on till the snake sheds it off. Keep it on clean paper.

U know, that is a great idea, was thinking i'd have to take a band aid off and risk more damage but just let it shed off...makes perfect sense, thanx!!!
